When my family and I started our company 40 years ago, we were working out of a garage on a $600 bank loan, assembling miniature picture frames.. Our first retail store wasn’t much bigger than most people’s living rooms, but we had faith that we would succeed if we lived and worked according to God’s word. From there, Hobby Lobby has become one of the nation’s largest arts and crafts retailers, with more than 500 locations in 41 states. Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family. We’re Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I’ve always said that the first two goals of our business are (1) to run our business in harmony with God’s laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that’s what we’ve tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week’s biggest shopping days, so that our workers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God’s grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We’ve not only added jobs in a weak economy, we’ve raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage.

Now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government healthcare mandate says that our family business MUST provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don’t pay for drugs that might cause abortions, which means that we don’t cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million PER DAY in government fines. Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company that’s raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. It’s not right. I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that it’s the same for everybody. But that’s not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it won’t exempt them for reasons of religious belief. So, Hobby Lobby and my family are forced to make a choice.
With great reluctance, we filed a lawsuit today, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, asking a federal court to stop this mandate before it hurts our business. We don’t like to go running into court, but we no longer have a choice. We believe people are more important than the bottom line and that honoring God is more important than turning a profit. My family has lived the American dream. We want to continue growing our company and providing great jobs for thousands of employees, but the government is going to make that much more difficult. The government is forcing us to choose between following our faith and following the law. I say that’s a choice no American and no American business should have to make. The government cannot force you to follow laws that go against your fundamental religious belief. They have exempted thousands of companies but will not except Christian organizations including the Catholic Church. Since you will not see this in the liberal media, please pass this on to all your contacts.

Do your employees know you make business decisions based on your religion in that you want to control their life? Don’t you have health care that offers the morning pill/contraception?             amen.. I use to work for an insurance company. You can’t buy a policy to suit you. There are several offered, that have to do with doctors, copays, etc.. but not what is covered. So all policies cover birth control and medical abortions.. You can’t pick one that doesn’t. If the policy covers it,, just don’t get it. I don’t understand the fuss. Agree with you.

        Did you even read the article? They provide health insurance, and pay really well for a retail job. They care very much about their employees. The only thing they don’t want to do is provide contraceptives that cause abortions, like the morning after pill. No where does it say they don’t provide contraception. And yes, their employees know that they make business decisions based on their religion. Hobby Lobby is, and always has been a very open religion based business. I have known since the first time I set foot in the store that it was run by Christians, with Christian principles.

Having worked in sexual health education for 15 years at a leading women’s hospital, I can tell you that the emergency contraceptive pill can work one of two ways. Either a fertilized egg is unable to implant and continue to develop OR ovulation is delayed. There is no way of knowing which way it will work, so calling it an “abortion” pill is inaccurate. And since early miscarriages happen more often than is reported, that makes god the biggest abortionist of them all. Having beliefs is one thing. Forcing everyone else to act in accordance with your beliefs is no different than sharia law. Denying employees health coverage for the reasons they give is just plain wrong.

            Pregnancy doesn’t happen right after sex. That’s why it’s possible to prevent pregnancy even after the fact. It can take up to six days for the sperm and egg to meet after having sex. Emergency contraception pills work by keeping a woman’s ovary from releasing an egg for longer than usual. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with sperm.
            You might have also heard that the morning-after pill causes an abortion. But that’s not true. The morning-after pill is not the abortion pill. Emergency contraception is birth control, not abortion.

The depolarization caused by sperm penetration results in one last round of division in the egg’s nucleus, forming a pronucleus containing only one set of genetic information. The pronucleus from the egg merges with the nucleus from the sperm. Once the two pronuclei merge, cell division begins immediately.

            The dividing zygote gets pushed along the Fallopian tube. Approximately four days after fertilization, the zygote has about 100 cells and is called a blastocyst.         My grandson was born 6 weeks early, per their new way of calculating gestation. I was told by NICU at University Hospital, Baltimore, MD that per OBAMACARE they had the right to keep that baby in the hospital until he was full term. This baby was 5 lbs 14 oz and 18 inches long and drinking FROM a bottle when they shoved a tube down his throat and took him off bottles completely to justify keeping him. I called him “our little Gitmo baby”.

          Evidently you also have no idea about the health of your grandchild. NO PHYSICIAN would ever insert an NG tube into a new infant unless it was medically necessary. That baby must have been aspirating more formula into his lungs than into his stomach. Aspiration pneumonia in newborns will kill. Thank the doctors and nurses for caring for your grandson. If you have sex with out protection that is your personal choice. Why should I pay for it? I don’t expect someone else to pay for my bad decisions.

Christianity is a GENERAL religion and that is what the COUNTRY was founded on, christian principles and ideology, but that is not a SPECIFIC religion. Do the research on what it REALLY means and why mentioning the CHRISTIAN Founding Fathers in the argument as violating church and state is INVALID.

          You must not have studied very hard. Virginia had a state religion, and there were others. It wasn’t until after the Civil War that things changed. The whole ‘separation of church and state’ was intended to protect the churches from the state, not the other way around. That is the interpretation that anyone with two brain cells to rub together has had since the beginning of this country. For the last 40 to 50 years liberals have been picking away at this obvious truth and trying to substitute their incorrect interpretation. Fortunately this isn’t ‘Mythbusters’ and you aren’t Adam Savage and you can’t “reject your reality and substitute my own.”

If you don’t believe this, I would suggest that you read the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution. It clearly states, “…anything in the laws or constitution of any state to the contrary NOTWITHSTANDING.”

        To quote Thomas Jefferson, “Christianity neither is, nor ever was, a part of the common law.” As the Treaty of Tripoli (treaties are a part of the law of our land) states, in Article 11, “As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…”

      Thank you for such a clear and educated response to this article. You nailed it on the head as far as I am concerned. The “church” is being forced to be inclusive, something God has been asking them to do for hundreds of years.
      One thing that really concerned me about this article was that I saw it on Facebook and the author qualified it by saying any negative response would be deleted and blocked. This is NOT the American way, and especially not Christian, to silence others’ views.

          Sir – Thomas Jefferson first used the words “separation of church and state” in reply to the Danbury Baptist Church who wrote him while he was President with concerns about the establishment of a possible state religion. He assured them our Constitution had built a strong wall between Church and State. He assured them that the government would never interfere with the practice of religion. We, as Christians [don’t know about you practicing secular humanists], were encouraged to participate in our government. The wall was never to exclude God or religion from being involved in government, but to reassure the congregation of Baptists in Danbury that their religion was safe from the government.

If you think that’s true then consider if Catholicism infiltrates the govt and decides that Friday no meat should be served (again). The govt then passes a law that no meat can be served in schools on friday – or any other govt facility. Perhaps, even restaurants.

        The church has influenced the govt and the govt is now taking away YOUR rights and imposing another religion’s tenets on YOU. Doesn’t that contradict your porous wall argument ? “not allowing the government to force people to do something against their religious beliefs.”

          I find it really sad that “tolerance” is preached from every public venue through out our nation. When it’s towards them, we have to have it, but when we ask it from them to respect our faith, it’s non-existent, and how dare we even expect it.

          This used to be a country that you could own a business in, and employ people that you thought fit for the job.

          This used to be a country where we understood that the very word “democracy” meant the majority ruled. Funny, how now, it’s not the majority that rule, rather the 1 or 2 % that are offended by the majority’s beliefs. We were taught in school to accept majority rule, it taught us – gasp – learning to accept things that we didn’t like – to not pout or throw a temper tantrum when we didn’t get our way. That’s not being taught anymore – we now, not only expect “tantrums” from “offended parties” – but we give in to them.

          I can’t convince anyone that there is a God. I can tell you that I know Him personally, have a very real, personal relationship with Him, and have seen Him act in more ways that you could imagine in my life.

          This man is making a choice to stand up for something that he believes in. For all of you that are “flaming” him for it, you seem to be perfectly happy with your freedom to do so. Is that any different? No, but you justify it because you are “offended”.

          If more people had the backbone that this man has, we would not have gotten into the predicament we are in now as a nation. I will continue to support this business until they close, if they are forced to do so.

            This IS a country where people can make businesses in. And business owners, including Hobby Lobby, can certainly chose which employer they deem fit to work for them. But businesses also MUST comply with the law. The law now significantly improve the lives of EVERYONE, including women, by making contraception (among other things) available. That doesn’t mean people are forced to use it. Women are, of course, most welcome not to use contraception. But the law is the law. And the law is based on facts and logic, and what’s best for people, for society as a whole. The Affordable Care Act in this regard is a significant step forward for ALL individuals.

            Why is Hobby Lobby so against healthcare for its employees? So against measures to significantly improve their lives and well-being? Why does Hobby Lobby care so little about the people who work so hard for the company? This isn’t about beliefs. This is sexism and misogyny.

    I hope you don’t close. You’ve provided jobs and a wonderful environment for folks to shop in. Just listening to the music when in the store is a blessing. I was listening to Busted Halo with Father on Sirius radio (a Catholic station) – though I’m not Catholic, and Father Dave addressed the awkward feelings a man was having attending the wedding of his male cousin to another man. The advice was insightful – Fr. Dave suggested that while attending, in some people’s minds was endorsement of the arrangement – it does not necessarily mean that you condone the New idea of marriage between same sex individuals. He suggested giving them a book on the true nature of Christ, while loving – as well as a book that teaches what Jesus taught to be the sacraments that cannot be altered by man. If you have to contribute to funds to causes that you do not endorse – at least you can still minister to folks by the Spirit filled environment you provide in a dark work and through the believers that you hire, as they minister to the hurting in their daily acts of stocking shelves, discussing projects and helping others celebrate the moments God has allowed in their lives.

I myself could not live with the fact that I was helping murder babies. You can call it what you want but I call it murder and I believe Jesus considers it the same. It breaks my heart to think that my tax dollars goes toward murdering babies or as you call it, abortion or to be even more polite, a choice. Jesus said render unto Caesar what is Caesars and to God what is Gods so I will give to Caesar and what he does with it is on him. This man would rather go out of business than support it.     The problem is that it can become a very slippery slope to exempt organizations based on their religious beliefs. I grew up in a church that taught it was a sin to see a doctor, a dentist, or any other medical person, it was a sin to so much as take a sip of pepto-bismol or to even use a lotion with lanolin in it; so if the guys there that owned construction companies or towing companies had their way they would say no medical insurance because one must trust God not man for healing. Should companies whose owners do not believe in seeking medical help such as extreme Pentecostal or Christian Scientist owners be exempt from providing any medical insurance?

The federal government is too big for its own britches and they should be immediately de-funded and shrunk back to the era that they did not run programs like this and are unable to get involved in things like this.     Myth: Emergency birth control pills cause abortion.

    Fact: Emergency birth control pills are not the same as the abortion pill and do not cause abortion. Emergency birth control pills will not affect an existing pregnancy. A woman is not pregnant until a fertilized egg implants itself in the wall of her uterus. Emergency birth control pills cannot cause abortion because they prevent fertilization and have no effect on an implanted egg.

    I am a Christian. I believe that God created me, and that His Son Jesus died for my sins. And because I am a follower of Jesus, I am called to speak truth. Hobby Lobby’s CEO is twisting myth into fact, and that is totally unacceptable from a man claiming to be a follower of Christ.

    It’s simple and it’s clear.

      Not sure what Bible you are reading from, but please see the scripture below and pasted above. A Christian believes God’s Word not what men say. Have you seen that pill work? And what is the fruit of that pill when it causes the fertilized egg to not implant (which is abortion by the way). God knew us from before the heaven and earth were created and that includes that fertilized egg. The fruit of that pill is fornication, adultery, sexual predators abusing children, and lastly us trying to control our lives and live them the way we think they should go, rather than allowing the blessings of God when and where he chooses. None of these things are the fruit of a Christian but of the flesh and wickedness. Please examine your own heart.

      God could just as easily kill each of us in judgment; however it is the blood of Jesus Christ and the grace and mercy of God that puts off that judgment and paid for our sins so we can be forgive and become sons and daughters through adoption by the new-birth.

        Yes – we have seen the pill work and HOW it works. An unfertilized egg is expelled.. just like every other month that the woman has her period. OR a fertilized egg doesn’t implant – just like 25 to 35% of EVERY fertilized egg without any help from any pill.

    Jessica, David Green has not stated that all of his employees believe the same as his family does, or that they are not able to take post-conception birth control. It sounds like he just doesn\’t want his company\’s health care to provide them. His company would be enabling behavior that is against his beliefs, and willfully enabling something is basically the same as performing the act itself. For example, people are charged as accessories to a crime because they, in some way, willfully enabled the crime to occur.Mr. Green should not be made out to be a tyrant, or a control freak just because he doesn\’t want his company to PROVIDE these medications. The employee is still free to go and spend their hard earned cash (paid at 80% above minimum wage) however they want.

He simply believes that he and his family or board of directors should be able to control their own lives and the business that they have built. Nothing prevents his employees from getting any ‘services’ that are legally available in the market place; he simply does not want to pay for them. This argument about not providing “health care” demonstrates a convoluted view of both the facts of the situation and about the role of the federal government according to the Constitution.     I praise God for a company who bases their business goals on Biblical prinicples, who cares about their employees and treats them well and provides every possible benefit for them.
    The government has no business telling you what you can or cannot do regarding health insurance, Christian principles or anything else. I applaud your willingness to stand behind your convictions and uphold your principles. I also applaud your willingness to stand up for your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and your willingness to “obey God rather than man”.

    I must say I am very sad that Hobby Lobby is hiding behind the government. I understand your beliefs as I am a Roman Catholic as well. However I have been taught not to throw stones you have no idea why they may need this medicine. I am speaking from experience. My 14 yr daughter was raped and we were contemplating abortion as once she realized that the threats of a punk would not come true. Fortunately she kept my grandson and he has been the best thing ever. Hobby Lobby think long and hard as a Christian are you in a place that you can judge the woman who might need it. Not only that you stated that you take pride in your employees yet you are threatening to put them all out of a job due to a law that should be there. One of my really good friends works there, and I know he’s not christian. So while David Green is trying to say the government is forcing their rules on him, he’s forcing his rules on everyone else.         What makes him so much better is that he has made all the capital investment to build this business with his principles. You don’t have to like them, agree with them, use them in your personal life. You do have to honor them in the workplace and for that, you get paid. You have no risk, he has it all, and always has. What makes him better is that when the government forces him to compromise his values, he can close his doors as fast as he opened them. And, I hope he lives by his principles.

    I can’t believe that anyone thinks it’s a good idea for a business to be able to tell you what medical services are or are not covered by your insurance. To me that is a very scary precedent to set. Stop and consider for a second a scenario where Christianity is not the predominant religion, would you be as eager to allow religion to influence the law of the land.

    Another point that I think gets overlooked is no employee of Hobby Lobby or any other business is required to take any form of contraception, only that it is available and covered if the employee so chooses. I absolutely believe that the rights of the employee should trump those of any business every day.

    I have ALWAYS respected Hobby Lobby because it is a Christian store. I love that they are closed on Sunday so their emplooyees can observe the day of rest. I love listening to gospel music within the store. I have never spoken to an employee that didn’t love their job there…now that’s saying something! I agree with David Green about not honoring anything that goes against what God says. God does say that it is better to obey God rather than man.     United States of America, free to choose what you believe. WRONG. The owners of this company are being told they can not run a business they own because of how they believe. I am NOT a christian and even I can see this is wrong. Those working for Hobby Lobby, if you do not like the insurance you get from them (or don’t), you are more than happy to choose to go to another insurance company that supports your own beliefs. Every company has pro’s and con’s when you begin working with them. At that point you are given information about what is included and what is excluded. YOU then have to make a CHOICE whether you want to live with the con’s or not. So every person that is employed at Hobby Lobby understood what they company believes in BEFORE they begin working there. The owner should be free to run his company to what he believes in. Anyone working there that believes differently, you knew it BEFORE you started working there. Get your own insurance. Easy fix.

    As a Muslim I agree with not funding cosmetic abortions. Islamically only in cases of rape, incest, and the mother’s health is an abortion deemed a viable option. I believe Hobby Lobby should weigh the benefit of closing and the benefit of allowing health care for their employees to consist of an abortion option. Which will God be more pleased with.     I have just read every single statement, I was saddened to see no questions about the women that have had abortions. Maybe they are not important, maybe you haven’t thought about them; maybe we are all too busy shouting at each other.     Sadly I know more than my share of ladies that has experienced such a nightmare, because I am one of them. I was young, and naïve. I already had 3 small children, and in a place of uncertainty. I found myself pregnant. Who would understand? A girl at work told me I could go to plant parenthood tell them some lame story and they would give me the money and set up the appointment. I did and they did to the T everything she said they would do. This person took me to the clinic up north I was shocked at the age group of women. It was stone cold silent. No one looked at each other in the eyes. Still I went on, they called my name. I went in; Doc said he had to give me some kinda shot. No problem I thought. He said, “See ya in 2 hours. I’m thinking this is a piece of cake. No in fact the worst of all nightmares was right around the corner. It was to late, I had to go through with it. No one told me the truth about what I would see, hear, and feel, no one told me my emotions, guilt and self worth would be smashed.
    I was going to committing suicide my mother came to my door 7:00 am. Long story short she got through and I got saved. I couldn’t handle the guilt, shame, and nightmares. No one tells you how you might hear the baby crying. No one tells you the TRUTH. Every single person that has gone on to have an abortion after sharing with them the TRUTH has come back in tears. They could not believe the horror that I spoke about, at least not till it was too late.
    So is the morning after pill abortion? Let me answer it with another question. If you have sex and you take nothing afterwards let nature takes its course, could you become pregnant? If you take the morning after pill, with you determining the outcome what would be the chances? TRUTH no one tells you that after you take that pill you start thinking, “What if I was pregnant.” For every choice, for every decision there is an outcome, no matter what. There are 2 deaths more often 3. The woman that dies inside, the daddy who dies a silent death, he too has no choice. Then the un-seen, un-speak able horrible death of the baby. The dreams of having a family is gone away never to be for these 3 people. My abortion was over 28 years ago. I often wonder, if I hadn’t made that choice, if I hadn’t chosen to belief it was a cakewalk, if I had known 2 hours ahead of time to what I faced the 2 hours later would I had gone through with it? Not a chance and those that have talked to me say the same thing. Not one person has ever come back and said, “It’s my body, I will do with it what I want, Man that was so much fun.” The morning after pill is the same; there is another pill they want you to believe is safe, it’s one you take if the morning after pill does not work. It’s one that puts you into labor, o yes, Obama care does in fact want business to pay not just for that pill, but all stages of an abortion. WHO’S GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THE GIRLS, LADIES AFTER THEY FIND OUT THE TRUTH THE HARD WAY? THAT IS WHY THERE ARE SO MANY IN THE CLOSET, YES THE CLOSET….     Providing health insurance is just the provision of it; it should never be about how to limit it. The government was placed in a situation in which they had to ensure that the health care that businesses provide doesn’t discriminate against any employee. A business does not have the right to refuse to pay for any kind of health care or prescription drugs ordered by a health care provider. Period. God gave man Free Will. We each need to allow each other to exercise our Free Will for what is in our own best interests. You don’t need to agree with every decision anyone makes for themselves, giving them the Free Will they rightfully inherited by God is one of the highest rights bestowed and we all should be honoring and practicing that.     I am liberal. I am pro-choice. However, I personally could not get an abortion. I believe it is wrong. Coming from that place, I completely understand not agreeing with the morning after pill and other pills of that nature and I also completely support someone who chooses not to take one under any circumstances. That being said, just the same as you don’t want to be forced to do something you don’t agree with for religious reasons, it’s not fair for you to force others to follow the same beliefs. You can provide the insurance while never utilizing that yourselves. You cannot discriminate against your employees or potential employees based on their religious preferences (nor ever ask them what their religion is, or if they follow a religion at all) so you almost certainly have non-Christinan employees working for you- and perhaps they DO need/want these benefits. And they have a right to them. Providing the insurance is not going against your God any more than living in a world of temptation makes it God’s fault when you sin. No, it’s your own sin. And it would be your own employee’s sin that they will/will not answer to when they die. Instead of seeing this as a personal choice, you see it as your responsibility to force others to follow your own belief systems and would rather close down your stores leaving families without income, insurance, and the benefits they had grown used to (family time etc.) in an economy that will leave many/most of them unable to find alternative employment and what they do find will likely be fast food or other minimum wage jobs. That’s not what God would want.

    The only control at issue here is government control. Our traditional respect for freedom of conscience and 1st amendment rights are all but gone now. A private individual has no obligation whatsoever to provide and subsidize a so-called benefit that violates his/her conscience. To compel to do so is tyranny. There are any number of organizations who are happy to provide that cover. Maybe some of those who support elective abortion benefits would be happy to contribute to said organizations. Life is precious, and sometimes requires that we make tough choices. I applaud and support the Green family and their choice in this matter.

    It will be very sad to see so many people out of work… It will be sad to see such a wonderful store, I was just at a week ago go out of business.
    But as a Veteran of the US ARMY it is a decision I support. You have a right to fight for your religion and what you believe in…. KUDOS in many ways to you, yet very sad for your employees who will not be with work and rely on the pay check.
    Knowing you are not the only company that will go out of business once this takes form… There is going to be a huge back lash from this, there will be more Americans without work.

    is’t HL a private company? shouldn’t they be allowed to provide whatever insurance they can/chose to employees? Separation of church and state refers to not allowing the church to run the government but not that it shouldn’t have rights under that government (that it for so long has supported.) I am insured by a simular insurance plan. when my daughter needed hormone therapy in the form of “birth control pills” to treat medical problems
    she was covered by the exceptions clause that allows for such if accompanied by a letter from the doctor. We have some of the best insurance in the country and it is threatened by “Obamacare”. These companies being mocked are the ones I see taking extrodinary measures to care for their employees. Why is the government making it so hard to nye on impossible for them to continue? Don’t they want the employment numbers? ;)

    First of all, why do Christians have to use opportunities like this to argue with EVERYONE? On topic, I am saddened to read this, but I would be sadder if this company succumbed to the bullying of the government. I am an RN student, and I am concerned for my future as they are trying to tell medical professionals that we must perform abortions or risk losing our jobs. However distressing these situations may be, we must stand on the Word of God and seek the leading the Holy Spirit. Then we must trust Him with whatever the outcome. I will be soooo sad to see Hobby Lobby sell, but if that is what the Spirit leads, then so be it. Is there any way around this? Perhaps you could incorporate pro-life literature in the hiring process and explain that you do not support abortion. It could also be a way to share hope and truth with others. Just a suggestion :) I will pray for your family to find courage and strength to follow any direction the Lord leads you in. And if you do close, please know that you will be missed!!! I almost can\\’t bear the thought of shopping at Walmart again for home decor :( God bless!!

    I wonder why is it perfectly ok for people who are pro choice to force their beliefs on this company or anyone else for that matter but when he expresses his beliefs you make him to be a bad person who doesn’t care about woman or his staff?

    Why is it those who scream for tolerance of their views have non for views that differ from theirs? This is a privately owned company he has every right to run it the way he chooses and you have the right not to work or shop there. No one forces anyone to apply for a job there and no one forces them to stay if they don’t like the way he runs his company. I have worked for a company or two that I didn’t agree with the things they did and I left. I didn’t try to change them I moved on and found something that was more in line with my beliefs and morals. So instead of trying to force this company to bend to your views why not just mind your own business and let those who work for them decide what is best for them. If this is such a big deal people wont work or shop there and they will be out of business in short order. I am willing to bet they would weather the storm because all indications is they treat their employees very well across the board. At the end of the day what’s is more important than that anyways.

This article fails to mention how plastering ones religious beliefs all over the place made people like me stop shopping there in the first place. AND right about the time you want to tell me that this is hurting business, look at a company like IBM. They are going to save MILLIONS because of Obamacare. They are going to avoid the tripling cost of care because of this law. How is this for competition? In January 2014, the Colorado insurance exchange for healthcare is going to have over 500 plans offered by more than 100 health insurance companies.

    My advice for Hobby Lobby: Close shop chumps! There are responsible corporate citizens who do take care of their workers – that is where my business goes.

      If you had read the article you would know that Hobby Lobby *has* been taking good care of its employees: “We’ve not only added jobs in a weak economy, we’ve raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80% above minimum wage . . .” as well as receiving health insurance.

      Obamacare is now also forcing Trader Joe’s, another notoriously good employer, to cut insurance for those who average under 30 hrs. per week, the very people who by their own admission primarily work there for the health care.

      They (the employees) CAN be responsible. On their own dime. It goes against the business owners’ principles based upon their faith in Christ that it’s wrong to kill innocent life, and that’s what abortion is. And abortifacient drugs too. Why should he pay for what he thinks is wrong? Just like you wouldn’t contribute to a crisis pregnancy center which has as its reason for being, to help expectant mothers who are facing an unplanned pregnancy, to raise the children that they are bearing, or to arrange for an adoption. (I say this plausibly you wouldn’t contribute, based upon your convictions that you have expressed, above.) Same for the family that owns Hobby Lobby! They shouldn’t be expected to pay for something they think is wrong!

    Has any legal advisor suggested that you (Hobby Lobby) amend your business? To make it a not for profit 501c3 with the stores becoming overtly evangelical and the funds from the sales going to support missionaries or other evangelical functions. That way you could claim you WERE a religious organization. Possibly set up the foundation, then sell Hobby Lobby to it as a funding source? I don’t know if this would work but it could be considered!

If you are a Christian based company, promote Christian believes, probably hire Christian people…how many of them would actually choose to use one of these drugs anyway? You don’t make the drugs, you didn’t design them, your not making the decision to use them, and it ‘s not your place to judge those who do. Maybe you could take a poll of your employees….”How many of you would forgo the use of these drugs in order to keep your apparently GREAT paying jobs, continue to have health insurance for you and your family, continue to be able to put food on the table and a roof over your head?” Hmmm! And what about employees who have health problems or life threatening diseases who currently depend on the health care you provide or the income they receive….if you close your doors you might actually cause some of these people to loose their life. How is that any different?

There are many Christians who believe in birth control, that should not be an excuse for not supporting employee health care. That is just as bad!     I’m sorry but in a capitalistic society (like the one we have here in America) if the market dictates a change and you don’t, but your competitors do, and you start losing business to the point that you close, then though!

    Hobby Lobby carved out a niche of providing arts and crafts to 45 year-old women, then the market corrected itself by losing the monopolistic grasp of Hobby Lobby, and in conjunction with a change in the procedures and practices of the market (in this case a government mandate) they complain that they are being unfair and picked on for their bigoted beliefs? You want to be a christian, fine, but don’t hide behind this cry that the government is being too tough on me, especially when you keep voting for representatives who would rather have a laissez-faire style economy…. people are so dumb in this country…

Well then, those people wouldn’t be using the contraceptives, etc. Why does the company care whether they have have to supply these things or not. If the people they hire won’t be using them, then they aren’t paying for anything. Maybe the boss is a Jehova’s Witness, who won’t pay health insurance for a blood infusion that they need when they are sick. Maybe the boss is a scientologist who refuses to pay for mental health treatment when your family gets sick.

    You and your business are not there to play God. Give employees basic healthcare, and if they can reconcile an abortion with their God, it’s not your place to judge. You are running a company, not a church.

    Whatever personal, religious, emotional beliefs are really do not matter in this matter. What does matter is that the government is trying to force people into doing what they want them to do, but at the same time on a selective basis. I really feel for this businessman who only wants to run his business his way. If you don’t want to work for someone who will not provide medical insurance coverage for the procedures/medications he has outlined then go get a job somewhere else. If you notice I have not stated my own personal beliefs on this matter, nor will I as my personal beliefs are not important in a matter concerning the basic rights of Americans to have a choice. The government will force Americans to accept and change rules and laws based on the religious beliefs of others, (i.e. the call to prayer bells in many cities, the wearing of religious head dress), yet they will not allow an American businessman the same in this matter. Now you tell me what is wrong with that? Selective government is the way our country is run, not a democracy as we are supposed to be. So please remember this whole controversy is really about our freedoms being compromised and take it from there. I fully expect to be ranted on for this, but that is o.k. as well. After all we are all entitled to our own opinions, thoughts and beliefs.

We live in a wonderful country where he was given the ability to start a business and it has flourished. He attributes the growth of his business to his faith and he is now forced to either compromise a portion of his belief system or continue to fight a government mandate. Many of you want the man to “sell out” I applaud him for having enough conviction to go the distance with it.

    I do not understand why anyone argues about this topic or tries to explain whether what he wants to do is ok or not. Regardless of your opinion of his beliefs the bottom line is that this is a private business and no one should be able to tell him what he can and cant do or has to do (other than not harming people ie. murder, poisoning, child labor etc). What if the gov’t decided that every business should only hire Asians that are no more than 5’5″ tall, have a size 5 foot and are no older than 25? Sound silly, sure, but theres nothing logical that says you should provide healthcare either. What if they said you had to provide a spa day or a psychiatrist? The point is people that they shouldn’t be able to tell you what you have to do when your business is privately owned, or even publicly owned but not subsidized by the gov’t. You think its ok that they take away the rights of business but what if it were yours & they made, mandated, that you do something they wanted that you didn’t like or were against? And this law says even YOU have to do something or pay a fine or go to jail. Come on, based on belief or simply disliked this law is unconstitutional and illogical and will haunt you in its direct effect on everything that happens from here on in America with respect to loss of freedom.

      Shary – you are exactly right that HL is a business. A FOR PROFIT business, not a church, or a non-profit. That means they need to follow the law. If you own a business but decide you don’t want to pay taxes, do you get to not pay taxes just because you don’t want the government to tell you what to do? Your argument is illogical and silly, at best. This law is not unconstitutional; it is the law, deal with it. Funny how you people think that only YOUR beliefs matter and that you should be able to do whatever you want while you tread on the rights of others that believe differently than you.           I did not say I believe Obama. However, prove that he has lied. You cannot. Prove that he is not Christian, when he has stated that he is, his Churches have stated it, his wife has stated it. Show an example of how he has given Muslims deferential treatment over Christians. Your assertion that Jesus was God in the flesh applies only to some Christians, not all, and does not discount the God of the Old Testament, which the Muslim and Jewish Gods are one and the same.

    This isn’t about abortion, or women’s rights, or anything like that. It’s about religious freedom.

    The owners and their families hold a philosophical and moral objection to some things that the government is trying to force them to do. This very COUNTRY is founded on the idea of seperation of church and state, among other things. If they have a moral obligation against certain kinds of non-life-saving medications, they shouldn’t be legally obligated to supply them.

    You cannot legally mandate morality or ethics. It doesn’t work that way.

It doesn’t terminate a life, it prevents the sperm and egg from attaching, therefore it is no more against the bible than a condom. She is probably considered a terrorist, because along with her extensive list of credentials, she is a Christian. I’m confident she would support your reasons for your decision.     OMG PPL! It’s not an abortion. Birth control and the morning after pill are as much abortion as male masturbation is. Go to your local pharmacy and ask to see the morning after pill, it says right on the box that if you are already pregnant the drug will have no effect because it does not terminate pregnancies, only kills sperm before they reach the egg. Hobby Lobby is full of shit. They’re using religion to hide behind being greedy. By their definition of abortion masturbation is murder, having sex with a condom is murder, using spermicidal gels is murder etc. Come on, I’m all for religious conviction but when you’re flat out lying to hide your greed you deserve what you get.

As a Christian business I would think you would be at least as concerned about relieving all your employees of their jobs as you are about having to pay for their birth control.     Dear Mr. Green,

    Does your current health insurance policies for your employees provide them with birth control pill, injections, O-rings, etc? Most people don’t know this, so don’t feel bad if you don’t. Doctors do not readily share this information.

    When a woman uses these kind of contraceptives, each month the ova can get fertilized (becomes a zygote). At the end of the three week cycle when the user takes the “off” pill, it causes the menstrual lining of the uterus to release…thus washing out the zygote. However, countless fertilized human eggs…babies…are destroyed every day by these contraceptives and you have not, obviously, been informed about this.     Dear Hobby Lobby,
    I understand your reasons and I disagree with the healthcare plan, but personally believe that closing the stores isn’t the answer…that is what the gov’t wants…more people to rely on THEM….so you would be doing your employees a disservice.

    Technically there are a TON or rx meds that are NOT safe during a pregnancy and can kill the baby…granted these morning after pills are meant exactly for that…but just because you are now required by law to OFFER it as part of the insurance shouldn’t change anything. If someone chooses to kill their baby, they will via pay for the abortion later in the pregnancy or take the morning after pill…it is THEIR sin, not yours.

    Don’t let the gov’t rule your life…let God. Now if God is telling you this is what you have to do, by all means, do it. Just pray hard and fast…seek God’s will.

    Abortions happen legal or illegal (my mother was a result of a rape in 1950 and her birth mother was 15 and went to a “back alley” abortion clinic in ATL…the dr who killed plenty of babies refused to kill my mom b/c her birth mom was so young)….so an abortionist actually saved my mother’s life. God can take what is meant for evil and turn it into something good!

    Your employees will make their choice whether it is required that you offer that as an option or not. What you would be doing is putting them out of a job and hurting their families that they are trying to provide for.

    Please pray more before making a decision that will impact so many. I am anti-abortion (in any case) and anti Obama plan…but fighting back and speaking out says more than giving up.

    I respect the fact that you have your religious beliefs. However, you cannot and must not impose those religious beliefs on your employees. It\’s as simple as that. If you feel you must go out of business as a result, so be it. You have a responsibility to follow federal law, and if you feel something else is more important than that, then you should stop doing business in the US. But don\’t blame the governement for that, that is YOUR CHOICE.

    His family’s religious view’s.. HIS FAMILY’S views. One part of religious freedom that he is failing to acknowledge is that each person has the right to chose what they believe and how they want to relate to their God. Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, E-Free, Lutheran, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Fundamentalists, Mormons… No one believes the same, worships the same, or will agree on it all. Religious freedom means that each person has the right to choose how they want to worship. Why does Hobby Lobby, religious medical facilities, or any other business with a religious backing feel that they have the right to push THEIR beliefs on their employees?

    Each person makes choices and those consequences are between them and God. If you don’t want to use some aspect of your health care plan, then that is your choice. But who are they to deny people, specifically WOMEN, access to equal healthcare. When Viagra first came out, it was covered under medical insurance by a specific religious employer, but that employer’s healthcare would not cover birth control pills for a woman with endometriosis so bad that she had to have surgery to get it under control.

    It is not Hobby Lobby’s job to tell their female employees what they can or can’t do with their bodies. It is an individual decision that needs to be respected.

    I’m sad to hear you would put thousands of people out of job because you can no longer dictate what they decide to do in terms of their own family planning, and prevent them from making decisions they feel best for their health and bodies.
    Emergency contraceptives are not abortion-inducing drugs. Medical professionals have made that quite clear, and use science- not personal views, to educate the public on the mechanism of the drugs. Sadly, scare tactics such as yours have swayed many people to believe a myth over actual science, and now use it as an excuse to financially devastate people.
    I’ve been a loyal customer for years. It all stops today. I’ll take my business elsewhere.

    I think this is the final nail in the coffin for me and Hobby Lobby. I really like the stores offerings and I actually respect the fact they close on Sundays for their employees. But I’ve had some bad customer service there recently and this is just infuriating. I have to think that most of his employees need medical coverage for serious medical conditions, not rampant abortion pill taking. If we let companies cherry pick what they will and will not cover they will most liekly take it too far. So that’s why it needs to be out of the company’s hands. What else will they decide not to cover, birth control pills?

    This doesn’t strike me as a very “Christian” attitude to have towards the employees that work there. The owners would be willing to put all of those people out of work just to prove a point? Doesn’t sound right to me. I also thought there was a verse in the Bible about submitting to the governing authorities in matters of the law. Apparently that one doesn’t apply to these “Christians.”

    An employer no more gets to dictate health care options to its employees as they do get to dictate how an employee spends their paycheck. Does this religious dictator tell his employees they are not allowed to use their paycheck on alcohol? on buying Playboy magazines? on watching R rated movies? on supporting Democrats? No, he is not allowed and if his response is to take his ball and go home, let him. Perhaps he and his family can go on welfare and food stamps, something he and his right wing cronies think is such a sweet ride.

    I am writing this letter to you concerning my wife that got severally injured in your Deerbook store in Houston, Texas. It happened in June 2003. I am sure you are aware of this subject.

    My wife is disabled, she is diagnosed with Traumatic Brain and Head Injuries. Her eyes continually blink. They said it was caused when her head it the concrete floor. Also she goes to a Orthopedic for her back and neck injuries.

    Since she is under the care of Dr. Paul Schultz, at Baylor Medical . He is the Dr. that found all her head and brain injuries. The first hospital stay under Dr. Schultz
    Care, she had a stroke. And now she continually has what they call miney strokes. At the time of Dr. Shultz being her Neurologist as soon as one of your attorneys kept this information from the Judge. Because he knew this information would turn the case complety.

    We have been told how you are suppose to be a good Christian. I don’t see where that would be true. So many of my relatives, friends, nurses, doctors, ext. cannot believe this did not ever get to court, or no one from HL ever attempt to contact us. Do you knowwho is paying for my wifes Medicare, Medicade, SS,discipline? The State and Tax payers. I am attaching to you some of the many letters that I have sent.

    Like I mentioned to you, where is the Christian in you. There are many people from different cities that have stopped going to HL..But you must think that could not hurt your business. So if you would please read the attachments that I am sending you,

    All I want to see is JUSTICE for my wife that never had a chance to go to court of talk to a judge. She will be disabled for the rest of her life. And we have gone through all of our savings on Dr. bills and hospitals, test. Now we have to except money given to us by our family. When we were always the ones to give and help.

    I pray for you that you sleep at night, and when you look at your self you see a Christian.

It’s their right to determine how they’re going to run their business. You analogy is backward, the government is forcing it’s views on the owners of Hobby Lobby.     I am a man of faith and my understanding from my lifetime as a Christian is that we are to spread God’s word and the message of The Father and Christ to others – but I missed the scripture that called me to prevent my fellow man from making the choice themselves – or preventing the “non-christian options” from even being something they could choose. We have been given Free Will. A man brought to the table of our Lord by cutting off any other path is not a man who has accepted nor will even benefit from being seated at that table. If the founder of Hobby Lobby can’t see the huge opportunity they have within their company to touch hearts and spread Christ’s message to those who are open to and prepared to receive it….. and are going to turn their back on that profound opportunity because they can’t choose FOR their employees…. then they truly are missing the mandate they have been given by their faith! A sad day that they’re even contemplating this and I’m fearful they are using The Word as a tool in a task it was not forged for!

    1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness – Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend).
    He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16.
    Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

    I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I’m confident you can help.

      Jennifer, your name seems to imply you are female. Therefore you aren’t allowed to possess anything- you are to be a man’s property. That would be father till married and husband afterward. So your questions are or should be asked by your master- you know the man of the house.
      Then again you sign it with a males name, a James Kauffman, quoting his position, maybe looking for some respect as being educated? To him/you I would just like to share something, since you have shared so much that you don’t understand:

      Wow you really have a lot of hate going on, don’t you? If you could only understand how much he loves you. Do you understand the Jesus Christ is the end of the law….he fulfilled it. He is the essence of it. Did he not say Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength, and also to love your neighbor? Truth is we have all sinned and a loving God took death in our place so we can be forgiven. Can you believe that or will you continue to mock with all that knowledge? Either way you will stand and kneel before Jesus Christ one day. You should be glad we are not under the law as the Jew was….they couldn’t keep it and neither can any of the rest of us…it was meant to show us how sinful we are not how good we are. And stoning provisions were to keep the people pure. We don’t stone one another today….we love one another and we bring our own bodies into subjection unto the obedience of Jesus Christ…and love for him. If you could only realize what God has done for you.

Proof of that is the fact that the Capitol building was used for a lot of years every Sunday morning as a CHURCH! And….Wait for it…! Thomas Jefferson and several other founding fathers served on those Sunday’s as the preacher!     I agree 100% that this is wrong. But I also know that God said we are to follow the “Laws of the Land.” He didn’t say we can pick and choose which one’s either. So I believe the Lord knows that even thought it goes against all of our beliefs, we simply following his instructions. Although your heart is in the right place, Its going to be a shame that you effect so many of your employee’s lives because your confused about what the lord wants/would do. My belief is that he would follow the “Law of the Land.”

    “That is not going to happen. That is on the Internet with my name supposedly signed to it, but we’re not planning on shutting any stores down,” Green said. “We’ve got a battle to fight, and it may take years, but we feel like in the end we will win.”
    On the contrary, Green said Hobby Lobby intends to keep expanding while opposing the regulations.
    “We continue to grow, we’re adding 35, 40 stores a year. And so for us, as we grow and we earn more profits, we see that as just more ministry,” Green added. “So as long as there’s more ministries needed, then there’s more growth needed, so we continue to plan to grow.”

    I have read several of the post on here and can say that we, not as Americans, but as individuals have a lot to learn. It is sad that we can’t speak our mind without someone having something to say negatively about our personal feelings. As a pastor I always tell people that we can agree to disagree but still have respect and love for each other.
    Now as a pastor I will have to agree with some of what has been said about the scriptures that pertain to abortion, but it was not Jesus who said “I knew you in the womb,” for Jesus was the human form in which Christ, “the Son took on while on Earth.” Agree or disagree to rather He exists or does not exist is your choice, but is mine to believe He does exist. Christianity is not a religion, but is a way of life in which one follows the teachings of Christ to those we read of in the Bible.
    To the issue at hand about Hobby Lobby. They are a company who is founded and guides its business practices based on their beliefs in Christ and the Bible, “the Word of God.” According to our constitution there is a separation between church and state and it is there to prevent the government from making people do things against their personal beliefs, that’s why we have America because the Separatist wanted to worship without the government of England interfering in their lives.
    Hobby Lobby hires people everyday who know of its practices based on their beliefs so if they have a problem with it they should look for work somewhere else. If you went to apply for a job at a mental hospital that treated people with violent outburst, then you must be prepared for what will take place in the work force. Hobby Lobby has every right to close their stores if they wish, it happens everyday across America. Walgreen’s, Belk, JcPenny, Sears, Krogers, and several other name brand stores close everyday because of their personal desire to save money. Hobby Lobby is faced with a money issue as well as a belief crisis to the healthcare act.
    But above everything that I and others have said, please do each of yourselves a favor and respect the other persons feelings.

    go ahead and close, i’d rather see you go out of business that threaten and whine about how government is out to get you. i’m sure you’ve made millions off of government corporate welfare, also known as tif and sales tax rebates, and spreading taxes out over years and having the government pay for employee training etc. what a blowhard! fulltime employees make 80% over minimum? so, at a minimum, ALL your fulltime employees make at least $13.05 an hour? really, and what’s your ratio of full time to part time employees? cry me a river, just close your stores and shut up.

    Perhaps the writer of this blog should have done some research before he posted this. If Hobby Lobby was going to close business, tell me why they have opened 45 new stores this year and plan to open another 45 in 2014? And why are they building new offices and warehouses in Oklahoma City if they were going to close? And the letter by David Green posted above is correct except for the last sentence, that was added by someone else. Don\’t believe everything you see online.

    The morning after pill is by far the most helpful little pill! In cases where normal means of birth control fails (condom, birth control pills, etc), taking that one little pill will ease your worries. More often than not sex happens when it’s not planned, and its better to be safe than sorry with the pill. It is NOT covered by ANY insurance. What is covered is birth control. Pills, uid, all that stuff. Very useful for couples that are on the low income scale, or have had too many children already but cannot get an operation to fix that.

    What would be preferable to you? Preventing the pregnancy? Or waiting till there is something inside there and aborting it?

    It is an honor and privilege to have been a customer of Hobby Lobby and it is even a greater privilege to know that my money was spent in a business that honors GOD’S laws first. Paying a high cost for ones faith is not new in 2013 and has not been new for hundreds of years. David Green and his family have done their best to do well to their employees. First, they have never hidden the fact that they were Christians. If the employees wish to take a life, it shouldn’t be on the Green’s conscience nor should they have to do something that is against the very rules that make up their way of life!
    I for one, would be heartbroken to see this store close, but if it were me, I would rather close my doors and “kill” my business than to take a human life. If people would keep their bodies to themselves until marriage or use protection, they wouldn’t even have something to complain about!!!! If rape is a case then there are plenty of childless couples willing to pay for care and costs just to have a baby. Even in a case of a surprise pregnancy (is that an oxymoron?) There is always a right way, but this world is so bent on its own destruction that no one can see that they are destroying everyone and everything in their path!

    I see all these comments… and all I can think of is… it’s the founder of Hobby Lobby that has the right to what he sees fit for his company. No matter what anyone else says it’s his company and that’s it. If he doesn’t want the morning after pill within his plan who are you to say he has to?? You run your company the way you want to and Mr. Green will run his the way he wants to and if he is forced to go against his belief he has the right to do what he wants with his company. Also I can not support any company that allows the killing of a baby.. and I mean at conception! Mr. Green, I am sorry if you have to close your stores, Hobby Lobby will be missed as a wonderful place to shop.

    This is some kind of marketing ploy, or they just want to shut down and obviously don’t give a DAMN about their employees!

      Don’t fault them for living by their principles! The principle comes first, the rest follows. Sometimes those decisions are easy and sometimes it’s hard. The point of the article above is that Hobby Lobby was built on Christian principles. Since their closely held principles forbid them to do something that would thwart a human life, the easier choice is to scale back their business. Don’t diminish it to “might” obtain birth control, follow the logic, some employee “will obtain” these forms of contraception which means eventually “will abort” what is meant to be a human being.

    I understand your concern here. In fact I know some people here in Ohio that own a business and they are thinking of jumping on the religious over-ride for insurance and not get it for their employees because it covers blood transfusions and that is against their moral code and regardless of what their employees believe they have the right to deny them insurance due to their own beliefs. This is only the beginning.

    I Agree with Hobby Lobby founder!! Unfortunately, with certain elected and previous officials, taking religion out of schools, out of gov. etc., it has turned into a Pagan society. Why is Muslin prayer allowed in schools and not christian prayer? Makes one wonder. I hope this fight he wins if not, yes follow God and the Bible. We can prayer for the others and pray they can see what is happening in this US and the world. It is a true shame what the US has come to.

It seems to me that this country started out with the declaration of independence “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

    It’s ironic the owner of this franchise wishes to control the private, personal choices of its employees over insurance coverage concerning contraceptives when Hobby Lobby does business with China, which not only allows contraception for population control, but provides to its citizens abortion services as well.
